Planning for the future of Older People's Mental Health Services in West and East Hampshire  

The next stage of a public consultation on proposals to change the way we provide services.

Consultation Period 4 May to 27 July 2012

 In Hampshire, 17% of our population are over 65. The population of over 65s will increase by 30% between now and 2020. Our ageing population is a considerable challenge for the NHS, but we want to make sure we provide care and treatment which enables people to live well with mental illness in later life.

The key information about the consultation is as follows:

 

·         We currently have many empty beds within our older people’s mental

        health services which lie unused

 

·         We are proposing to close unused beds and continue to provide our care in

        community settings, allowing patients to remain independent for longer

 

·         Clinical evidence and improved drug therapies now enables many people

        to remain at home, or in residential care, whereas before the only option

        would have been hospital admission

 

·         Beds for the acutely ill will always be available

 

·         We are reacting to the needs of an ageing population – the number of over

        65s in Hampshire will increase by 30% between now and 2020

 

The consultation asks for views on the following two options:

1)     Do nothing: maintain the current number of inpatient beds

2)     Develop our community services and reduce under-utilised inpatient beds
